ODM senators have joined the chorus of criticism against the newly launched political party founded by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, expressing concerns over its potential to divide the country along ethnic lines.
Speaking on Saturday May 17, 2025 during a funeral ceremony in Homa Bay Town Constituency, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga cautioned against the rise of what they termed as “community-based political parties.”
The senators warned that such political formations threaten national unity.
Kajwang’ said the country cannot afford to slide back into ethnic politics, urged the people to remain focused on building a united nation that fosters growth, peaceful coexistence, and prosperity for all.
“If a blind man was to lead blind men, they would fall into a pit and that is the case of Gachagua’s party. Rigathi Gachagua was impeached. We found he abused office, he is unfit to hold public office, how do you follow someone without a political future?” said Senator Kajwang.
Senator Odinga echoed his sentiments, urging leaders to prioritize inclusivity and national cohesion over tribal alliances.
“We are in President William Ruto’s broad-based government and we dont regret being there,” said Senator Oburu Odinga.
The senators emphasized that Kenya’s future lies in unity and collective progress rather than in fragmented political identities.
Their remarks emerged a few days after Gachagua unveiled his new party, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), days after announcing that he has exited the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party.
Speaking during the launch at the party headquarters along Musa Gitau Rd, Lavington, Nairobi, Gachagua revealed that the party’s slogan was ‘Sikiza Wakenya’, but Kenyans can always interchange it with ‘Sikiza Ground’.
He also said that DCP’s symbol is a listening ear, because he believes every Kenyan must be listened to by their leaders.
Gachagua emphasized that DCP had been forged after careful deliberation and consultations across the country, with an objective to provide better leadership for Kenyans and provide good governance.
