The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced the temporary closure of the airspace over the Jomo Kenyatta Internatonal Airport (JKIA) from 10:26 am to 12:26 pm on Thursday, October 16.
The Authority says that the closure is to facilitate enhanced security rescreening operation following the arrival of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s remains.
“The safety and security of our passengers, staff, and all airport users is our highest priority, and this action is part of our unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest security standards,” KAA says in a statement.
Passengers with flights scheduled during this period are strongly advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest information on flight statuses and potential adjustments to their travel itineraries.
“We sincerely regret any disruption this necessary operation may cause and thank the public for their patience and cooperation.”
JKIA operations halted
Meanwhile, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has also announced that operations at JKIA have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing security situation.
A large number of mourners gained access to restricted areas, prompting a precautionary closure to allow security teams to restore order and ensure safety.
“Members of the public and travelers are advised to remain calm and avoid the airport area until further notice,” KCAA says. “Normal operations will resume once the airport is declared secure in the next two hours. A NOTAM of the same has been issued.”
“KCAA regrets any inconvenience and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation.”
