Over 200 elephants guided away from human settlement areas in Kwale, Kilifi counties; 11 had blocked residents access to a dam

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), in conjunction with Tsavo Trust and Pinal Air Ltd, on Tuesday, July 15 carried out aerial and ground patrols across Kwale and Kilifi counties, to address the issue of increased wildlife activity near human settlement areas.

The exercise overseen by KWS rangers from Silaloni, Mackinon and Bamba sections saw over 200 elephants safely guided away from populated areas in Ndatani and Mwangoloto.

In Vitengeni, the KWS Human Wildlife Conflict Rapid Response team responded to a report of 11 elephants blocking residents’ access to Mwahera Dam and successfully moved them to safer ground near Milore.

KWS insists that the patrol and monitoring exercise will continue in the most affected areas — Mariakani Barracks, Ndatani, and Vitengeni — with special consideration given to the presence of many young elephants in the herd, which require slower, more cautious movement.

“We remain committed to promoting human-wildlife coexistence and protecting lives, livelihoods, and wildlife. To report any wildlife incidences, please contact us via our 24/7 toll-free line 0800 597 000, WhatsApp us on 0726 610509 , or visit the nearest KWS station for immediate intervention,” KWS advises.
