An Air India passenger plane crashed on Thursday, June 12 shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, bound for London, United Kingdom, plunged into a civilian area near the airport, sending a massive black smoke billowing from the crash site.
Air India says that 242 people were onboard the Flight AI171 which departed Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs (local time)— 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew members.
“This includes 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national,” Air India says in a statement seen by TV47 Digital. “Injured passengers are being taken to the hospital. A dedicated emergency helpline has been set up at 1800 5691 444.”
“The building on which it has crashed is a doctor’s hostel… we have cleared almost 70% to 80% of the area and will clear the rest soon,” a senior police officer told journalists, as reported by the Times of India.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) says the crew of Air India flight AI171 gave a MAYDAY call to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) immediately after take-off, but gave no response after that to calls made by the ATC to the aircraft.
