Police officer dies of heart attack after collapsing at Wajir Madaraka Day parade

A police officer attached to the Wajir command died on Monday, June 1, 2026, after suffering a heart attack moments after completing the march-past at the Madaraka Day celebrations held at Wajir Stadium.

Hassan Juma Moyo collapsed at around 9.05am, just as the parade was wrapping up, in full view of hundreds of spectators gathered for the national holiday.

He was rushed to Wajir County Referral Hospital, where medical staff made efforts to resuscitate him, but doctors pronounced him dead at around 10am, less than an hour after he went down on the parade ground.

Authorities confirmed the cause of death as Myocardial Infarction.

The news of his passing was shared by Kwale County Woman Representative Fatuma Masito, who expressed her condolences on social media.

“It is with great sadness, on behalf of myself, my family, and all the people of Kwale County, that I receive with sadness the news of the death of the late Hassan Juma Moyo, a police officer who dedicated himself to serving our nation until his last breath when he suddenly passed away while on duty during the national Madaraka Day celebrations at Wajir Stadium,” she wrote.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and all residents of the Golini Lake area, who have lost their beloved and highly respected son,” Masito added.

The National Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on his passing.

Moyo’s death, however, is not an isolated incident, as Kenya has seen a troubling pattern of police officers and security personnel collapsing at state functions in recent years.

An administrator collapsed at Embakasi National Police College during a graduation presided over by President Ruto in December last year.

A Presidential Escort Unit sergeant died after collapsing at State House Nairobi in April 2025, and in February 2026, detectives launched investigations into another sudden police officer death at State House Mombasa.

A Navy officer also fainted during Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu in 2021.

The recurring incidents have reignited calls for urgent welfare reforms within the National Police Service and a closer look at the physical demands placed on officers during high-profile state functions.
