Police officers on Tuesday, June 17 opened fire at a hawker selling face masks at Nairobi CBD during demonstrations triggered by the murder of teacher Albert Ojwang’ under police custody.
In a video circulating on social media platforms, the two anti-riot police officers are seen cornering the hawker along Moi Avenue, before they descend on him with blows.
However, in the midst of raining blows on him, one of the officers is seen cocking his gun before shooting the man who drops to the ground. The two officers then flee from the scene.
Several demonstrators are then seen carrying the man to a hospital, in a bid to save his life.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has termed the incident “unacceptable”, even as the video continues to elicit a public outcry.
People’s Liberation Party (PLP) Leader Martha Karua shared the video, tweeting, “Another endless extrajudicial execution. How many deaths will it take for you to stop this?”
