Police probe Kitale violence after clash leaves officers injured and government vehicles damaged

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations into a violent political confrontation in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, that left two police officers injured and two government vehicles damaged.

In an official statement signed by NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, authorities strongly condemned political figures accused of violating the Public Order Act (Cap 56), warning that no leader will be exempt from prosecution regardless of their office or political standing.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the individuals concerned engaged in actions that undermined public order and the rule of law, thereby endangering the safety and security of the public,” Nyaga stated. “Such conduct is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society.”

The unrest erupted following a political gathering involving Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement and local leaders, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Tensions escalated late Friday night after security officers intervened to disperse political rallies that extended past permitted hours, prompting clashes between security personnel and supporters.

According to the NPS, two police officers were injured and two government vehicles damaged during the incident that saw leaders from the Linda Mwananchi movement tear-gassed in Kitale town shortly after addressing a rally that was held soon after President William Ruto had addressed another one at the same spot.

The region has experienced heightened political friction in recent weeks due to public disputes over development projects and local leadership alignments.

Police reaffirmed that investigators are working to identify the individuals behind the violence, citing offences such as inciting supporters, sponsoring criminal gangs, and disrupting public order.

“The NPS reaffirms that no person, regardless of social status, political affiliation, or public office, is above the law,” the statement noted.

The police service emphasized its commitment to remaining impartial and constitutional, calling on political figures and their supporters to exercise restraint as formal inquiries proceed
