Police in Nairobi have launched investigations into an incident where a man killed a General Service Unit (GSU) officer outside State House Gate D.

The Monday, October 13 morning incident left the whole nation in shock when the man used an arrow to kill the officer.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the tragic incident occured at approximately 8:10 am.

The 56-year-old man, armed with a bow and arrows, rapidly approached police officers stationed in the area.

“Despite being challenged to surrender, the suspect advanced on Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka and shot him in the left ribs with an arrow,” the NPS said. “General Service Unit (GSU) officers on duty swiftly subdued and arrested the assailant.”

The injured officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His body was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

The Service has condemned what it says is a “heinous act”, while commending the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm.

“An investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack.”

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Constable Ramadhan Mattanka, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The officer’s next of kin have been notified, and the Service stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.”

The incident came hours after another GSU officer guarding Jomo Kenyatta International Airport fence was strangled to death by a man after an altercation on Sunday, October 12.

The officer had reportedly gone to charge his phone near Kwa Mwenje Resort along Mombasa Road when the incident happened.

Constable Nahashon Katumo was found dead in a pool of stagnant water just a short distance from the airport fence, a police report said.

The suspect was apprehended by another officer who rushed to rescue the deceased.
