Police in Kahawa West, Nairobi, have seized more than 3,200 litres of illicit brew during an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal alcohol production and distribution in Soweto.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers attached to Kahawa West Police Station in Kasarani Sub-County carried out the operation on September 7, 2026, disrupting what authorities described as a large-scale illicit brewing network.

During the raid, officers confiscated and destroyed 3,200 litres of kangara, 45 litres of chang’aa and 10 litres of muratina. Police also recovered brewing apparatus and distillation equipment believed to have been used in the production of the illegal alcoholic drinks.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of one suspect. The suspect remains in police custody as officers prepare to process her for arraignment in court.

The NPS said the crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle the production and distribution of illicit brews and narcotic drugs across the country.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to continuing relentlessly with such targeted crackdowns across the country to eradicate narcotic drugs and illicit brews from the community,” the Service said in a statement shared on its X account on September 7.

Police further urged members of the public to report suspected illegal activities to the nearest police station or through the emergency lines 999 and 911.

The NPS also encouraged the public to use its #FichuaKwaDCI reporting channel on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The latest operation highlights continued police efforts to disrupt illicit alcohol production, which authorities say poses a threat to communities and public safety.
