President Ruto mourns Kibaki-era MC and veteran journalist Sammy Lui

President William Ruto has eulogised veteran broadcaster Sammy Lui Wang’ondu as a dedicated public servant.

Lui, a former master of ceremonies during the era of President Mwai Kibaki, died Thursday, October 23 afternoon at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County.

In mourning his death, President Ruto described Lui as one of Kenya’s pioneer journalists, with his powerful voice influencing many Kenyans positively.

“His sterling career influenced many who followed in his footsteps, and his huge contribution to our media industry will not be forgotten,” President Ruto wrote on his social media pages. “Our condolences to the family, friends and the media fraternity. Rest In Peace, Lui.”

Reports indicate that Lui, once a popular broadcaster with the then Voice of Kenya, which metamorphosed to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), was found dead on a seat in his house.

A police officer familiar with the incident told Nation.Africa that Lui was found dead while on a chair by a farmhand who was working on the farm.

After his time at KBC, Lui briefly joined Kenya Television Network (KTN), before he was appointed to the Office of the President.

Lui’s powerful voice, eloquence and humour became even more popular at national functions during Kibaki’s administration.
