Private security workers seek President Ruto’s intervention in pay dispute

The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU) has urged President William Ruto to intervene and ensure implementation of the minimum wage and the 6 percent salary increment.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Tuesday June 10, 2025, the union secretary general Isaac Andabwa blamed the Ministry of Labour for failing to implement the 6 percent salary increment and minimum wage for security guards.

Andabwa explained that the private security sector was facing challenges due to failure to implement the minimum wage in the country.

“We are calling upon President William Ruto to intervene in ensuring the government directive of increasing the minimum wage by 6 percent is strictly followed by security companies,” said Andabwa.

The union’s secretary general noted that some security companies had failed to implement the six per cent increment in their wage bill and underpaying the workers.

At the same time, he blamed the Private Security Regulatory Authority over an alleged failure to control the private security sector by issuing licences to companies that do not take care of the welfare of security guards.

According to Andabwa, most private security guards were unable to join the newly launched security sacco, that was launched by Cooperatives cabinet secretary Wycliffe Oparanya due to underpayment.

According to the Government of Kenya, the minimum wage in the country is Ksh 15,201 per month.
