The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, today celebrated a landmark achievement in Kenya’s labour migration journey during a visit to Tom Mboya University, Homa Bay County.
Dr. Omollo met with the first cohort of over 600 students who are in their final preparations for the B1 German language exam, a mandatory prerequisite for those aspiring to live and work in Germany.
The visit was aimed at assessing the progress and success of the training programme, which follows President William Ruto’s historic labour mobility pact with Germany – the only such agreement between Germany and a Sub-Saharan African country.
In September 2024 during President Ruto’s visit to Germany, the European nation signed an agreement with Kenya to allow more skilled workers from the East African country to live and work in Germany.
The labour and migration deal will also see the facilitation of the repatriation of Kenyans who do not have the right to stay in Germany.
Germany has an aging and shrinking workforce, with experts arguing that the country needs about 400,000 skilled migrants each year.
Dr. Omollo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Kenyan jobseekers from exploitation by unscrupulous agencies and ensuring that migration under the programme remains orderly, safe, and dignified.
