Elders of Kawuor sub-clan have moved to quell the growing speculation of internal divisions within the wider Oginga Odinga family as they marked the 32nd anniversary of the death of Kenya’s independence hero and opposition icon, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Speaking at the family’s Kang’o Ka Jaramogi home in Bondo, Siaya County, Omondi Odinga, who is a younger brother to ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga, dismissed reports circulating on social media of a rift between family members.
He insisted that the Odinga family remained united despite recent political turbulence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October last year.
Omondi added that attempts to pit Dr. Oburu against his niece Winnie Odinga were “out of context” and amounted to speculation. He said that Winnie is only playing her political game noting that if there is any issue, they have mechanisms which had long been laid down by Jaramogi Oginga to resolve them as a family.
Omondi called on Kenyans to respect the Oginga Odinga family saying that the late Raila Odinga would not wish his brother Dr. Oburu Oginga even when he was still alive.
Other family members including William Ojonyo who is a grandson of Jaramogi however, sought to project unity, emphasizing that the Odinga family remained cohesive. He stated however that their gates are wide open in Jaramogi’s home for any dissenting voices within the family, adding that if anyone feels disgruntled then he or she should come home and talk.
