Over the next five months, Nairobi residents can look forward to smoother roads as the national government, in partnership with the Nairobi City County, rolls out a KSh2.1 billion road improvement programme covering 62 kilometres across the capital.
The ambitious project was confirmed today during the official opening of the Savanna-Stage 17 Bridge in Soweto. President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson jointly announced that the roads upgrade will be delivered before the end of the year under the ongoing national-county partnership.
The road improvement targets several key areas within Nairobi. Starehe and Kamukunji constituencies will benefit from 7.9 kilometres of new roads, while Kasarani and Roysambu will also receive 7.9 kilometres of upgraded road infrastructure. Westlands is set to get 4.9 kilometres, with Dagoretti, Lang’ata, and other areas also included in the plan. Embakasi covering South, Central, East, and West constituencies will receive the largest share, with 24 kilometres of roads earmarked for rehabilitation and construction.
Speaking at the event, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving Nairobi’s infrastructure.
“We shall continue partnering with the Nairobi County Government to improve roads and infrastructure. It is our collective responsibility to ensure every road is done,” said the President.

Governor Sakaja, who accompanied the President in Soweto, praised the rapid progress on the Savanna-Stage 17 Bridge.
“We came here a few months ago when this road was impassable. The President made a promise, and today the Savanna-Stage 17 road is ready for use. In Embakasi East, Aviation Road to Fedha and Gate B Road will also be completed within three weeks. Many more roads across all 17 constituencies will be upgraded in the coming months,” Sakaja said.
According to county officials, the entire road works programme is scheduled for completion by December 2025, with the goal of easing transport and boosting connectivity across the city.
