Sakaja inspects newly-upgraded roads, pledges significant improvements of Nairobi’s 17 sub-county networks

Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has toured several newly tarmacked roads in Kilimani and Kileleshwa as the county accelerates its citywide road network upgrade.

During an inspection of Likoni Lane in Kilimani along with Durham and Gichugu roads in Kileleshwa Sakaja said the improvements are part of a comprehensive transformation of roads across all 85 wards.

The inspected roads, once notorious for deep potholes and frequent flooding, have now been resurfaced as part of an ongoing county programme aimed at rehabilitating long-neglected infrastructure.

Sakaja said the upgrades are part of a deliberate strategy to restore Nairobi’s road network ward by ward.

“For years, Nairobians have endured roads that were practically impassable. We are changing that. This work is happening in all 85 wards, and every sub-county will feel the impact,” he said.

The Governor highlighted progress already made in Kilimani, including works along Argwings Kodhek Road, noting that remaining feeder roads in the area will be completed in the coming phases.

“Where we stand today used to be a nightmare for residents. Now it is passable, safer, and more dignified. The few roads not done yet in this zone will be next we are not leaving gaps,” he added.

Sakaja said the county’s commitment spans the entire city, from Eastlands to Parklands, Lavington to Lang’ata, Karen to Kasarani, promising that Nairobi’s long-standing road challenges will be resolved once the 17 sub-county networks have been fully addressed.

“This is not a cosmetic fix. This is a citywide overhaul. Nairobi residents deserve drivable, well-maintained roads wherever they live,” he said.

The Governor also congratulated the six newly commissioned Borough Managers, stating that their role will be critical in ensuring development projects respond directly to community needs.

“Our borough managers will be the boots on the ground. They will coordinate development, solve local problems, and ensure every ward gets the attention it deserves,” Sakaja said. “This is about bringing government closer to the people because Nairobi works best when every neighbourhood works.”

The Governor said that in the coming weeks, even more roads will be tarmacked as the upgrade programme accelerates.

The Governor also highlighted major upgrades in Umoja, Fedha and Komarock, including new drainage systems and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as the Sh204 million Mihango Bypass a 5.4-kilometre link expected to ease congestion for thousands of commuters.

Beyond the eastern belt, improvements are underway in Zimmerman, Kabete, Thindigwa and Parklands, with ongoing works on General Mathenge Drive, Brookside Drive and 3rd Parklands Avenue.

Embakasi East and West are among the biggest beneficiaries of the KSh 2.1 billion Nairobi Roads Upgrade Programme, with significant works completed or underway on roads such as Umoja One SDA, Kwa Maji, Rockfield, Tena Police Post Access, Bypass–Mohango Link, Fedha–Tassia–Nyayo Road, Mohango Kajuju, Kibiku Muhuyu and Komarock access roads.

In Eastleigh, long-problematic corridors including Hombe, Muinami and Quarry roads are being rebuilt, restoring order in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.

Additional upgrades are progressing in Starehe, Dagoreti, Lavington, and Roysambu, with notable improvements on Chai Road, Kombo Munyiri, Mweni Road, Jacaranda Avenue, Karandini, Hatheru and Garden Estate.
