A stirring moment stole the spotlight during this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations when Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja made a heartfelt appeal to President William Ruto, proposing that the soon-to-be-unveiled Talanta Stadium be christened Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of Kenya’s iconic statesman.

Addressing thousands gathered for the national holiday, Sakaja’s request blended symbolism, unity and a touch of surprise, instantly transforming a routine speech into the highlight of the day.

“We kindly request our beloved President that next year’s Jamhuri Day celebration be held at the new Talanta Stadium, and we ask that it be named Raila Odinga Stadium,” Sakaja declared, his words triggering warm applause and visible excitement across the stands.

Supporters hailed the idea as a long-overdue tribute to Raila Odinga’s enduring contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey, while others praised Sakaja for embracing a spirit of national cohesion.

Talanta Stadium, now in its final phase of construction, is set to become the crown jewel of Nairobi’s modern sporting infrastructure, complete with world-class facilities designed to elevate Kenya’s presence on the international stage.

The stadium is scheduled for completion at the end of the year, in time for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is set to co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

It is expected to become the biggest stadium in the country, surpassing Kasarani Stadium, which currently holds 48,000 seats.

Sakaja’s suggestion has now added emotional resonance to the project, casting it not only as a sporting landmark but also as a symbol of unity and national memory.
