Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has urged football fans to turn up in large numbers at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday to back Nairobi United FC as they face Tanzania’s Azam FC in a high-stakes continental group-stage encounter kicking off at 4:00 PM.
Calling for a sea of support from the terraces, Sakaja said Nairobi United the only Kenyan side in the tournament are ready for the challenge and deserve full backing from fans across the country.
“Let’s come out in numbers and support our boys as they face Azam. They are ready and they have always made us proud,” Sakaja said. “This is the team representing Kenya in the tournament. I will be there, and I urge all fans to be there too.”
The much-anticipated East African derby is expected to be a tight, high-tempo contest as Nairobi United hunt for their first win of the group stages.
Sakaja spent part of Saturday with the team during a morale-boosting walk at the Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary. The team later wrapped up their final training session, exuding confidence and sharpness ahead of the continental test.
Shortly after the session, the governor joined the squad for a morning walk, using the opportunity to motivate the players and reinforce the club’s long-term vision.
“We are building an institution here, and we are proud of the progress so far. Even tomorrow, we will be behind you as you take on Azam,” Sakaja added.
Speaking during the team’s final media engagement, head coach Salim Ali and midfielder Lesley Otieno expressed optimism, saying the squad is focused, motivated, and determined to make home advantage count.
“Preparation has gone well and the team spirit is high,” Salim said. “With the changes we’ve made, we believe we have what it takes to get our first win and represent the country with pride.”
Nairobi United have bolstered their squad for the continental campaign with key additions, including Benson Omalla, the Harambee Stars striker who finished the 2023–2024 Kenyan Premier League season as top scorer with 19 goals.
Ugandan imports Charles Moses Waibi and Christopher Kizza have also joined the team, alongside experienced campaigners Kepha Aswani and former Kariobangi Sharks defender Steve Biko Omollo.
Organisers have confirmed that ticket sales will close ahead of match day, with no tickets to be sold at the stadium gates. Fans have been urged to secure their tickets early and be part of what promises to be a charged continental afternoon in Nairobi.
