Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri has moved to solidify support for the redevelopment of Gikomba Market, following a high-level meeting with market leaders aimed at accelerating plans for a modern trading hub.
Muchiri who met the leadership of Gikomba Market in this office noted that it marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between traders, the county government, and the national administration in delivering a state-of-the-art facility.
“Today, I had a productive meeting with the leadership of Gikomba Market to strengthen our collaboration and accelerate the development of the new modern market,” he said.
The Deputy Governor emphasized that the project aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritizes uplifting small-scale traders and expanding economic opportunities at the grassroots.
According to Muchiri, the planned market will feature safer and more organized trading spaces, improved infrastructure, and enhanced working conditions for thousands of traders who depend on Gikomba for their livelihoods.
“This project will deliver safer, more organized trading spaces, better infrastructure, and improved livelihoods for thousands of hardworking traders who power our economy every day,” he said.
He added that both the national and county governments are united in their commitment to transform Gikomba into a world-class trading hub capable of supporting small businesses and driving inclusive economic growth.
“Together with the national government, Nairobi County is committed to transforming Gikomba into a world-class trading hub that supports small businesses and drives inclusive growth,” Muchiri said.
The redevelopment of Gikomba Market has long been seen as a critical intervention in improving safety standards and boosting trade in one of East Africa’s busiest open-air markets.
