Salah rejoins Liverpool training ahead of critical Champions League trip to Marseille

Mohamed Salah rejoined Liverpool first-team training on January 20, 2026, following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The 33-year-old forward was included in the 20-man traveling squad for Wednesday’s Champions League Matchday 7 fixture against Marseille, marking his first involvement for the club in seven matches.

Salah’s return comes at a critical time for both the player and the club after tensions between the Egyptian international and head coach Arne Slot became public in December.

Salah claimed their relationship had broken down after a period on the substitutes’ bench.

The forward, who has scored four goals this season following a 29-goal Golden Boot campaign last year, had expressed frustration at being “thrown under the bus” during a dip in team form.

Despite the previous friction, Slot adopted a conciliatory tone during his pre-match communications, confirming he is happy to have Salah back.

Liverpool’s attacking options are currently stretched following a long-term injury to striker Alexander Isak, which likely accelerates Salah’s return into the starting XI.

While he was away, Liverpool maintained an 11-game unbeaten streak, though five draws in that period have seen the reigning Premier League champions slip 14 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool are currently sitting ninth in the Champions League and require a positive result at the Stade Vélodrome to move into the automatic qualification spots.
