Search for Kamukunji police officer swept by floods after rescuing 4 people continues

The rains that were received in different parts of the country on Sunday, March 24, caused floods that wreaked havoc.

In Nairobi County, at least four people have been killed in separate incidents after being carried away by floods.

Among those killed is a police officer based at Kamukunji Police Station.

Reports indicate that the officer, in the company of two of his colleagues (Jared Kemboi and James Mutea), both of Kamukunji Police Station responded to a distress call from a family that was drowning within Country Bus Station.

“At around 22:10 hours while on duty they were trying to rescue three women and a child in stall NO. 3 and 4 from partial collapse of the slab connecting their stalls and the pedestrian walkway,” a police report says.

The report adds: “After successful rescue, PC David Chesire…Went back to assist locking the stalls when suddenly the remaining holding slab caved in and as a result the officer was swept away by the raging waters together with his rifle (a loaded AK47).”

Officers from Kamukunji and Central Police Station are currently searching for Constable Chesire.

However, there are no professional divers at the scene, with police engaging street children to help retrieve Constable Chesire.
