Police in Sotik, Bomet County, have arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly slaughtering a dog and attempting to sell its meat to unsuspecting members of the public.
Richard Kigen was apprehended after Sotik Township Assistant Chief Madam Emma informed the police of the incident.
According to a report filed at Sotik Police Station on Friday, May 16, Kigen was in the process of selling the selling meat parts to unsuspecting members of Chemagel and Kimase areas of Sotik Municipality.
Acting on the report, police officers launched a manhunt for the suspect and nabbed him, recovering approximately 15kgs of various parts of red dog meat, “neatly arranged in plastic gunny bags”.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect confessed to police officers that his intention was clear- to sell the meat to locals.
“County veterinary office was involved and the suspect plus exhibits recovered to assist on further probe and accompanying legal process,” the police report reads in part.
Authorities say the suspect will face a charge of slaughtering an undeclared animal, dog, contrary to Section 2 of the Meat Act, CAP 356 and cruelty to an animal.
“The law is clear. Animals meant for human consumption must be declared, inspected, and handled according to regulations,” said the county veterinary officer. “This kind of activity poses a serious public health risk.”
