Showmax shuts down after 11 years and KSh 56 billion in losses

Showmax positioned itself as Africa’s home for streaming, a digital platform built for the continent’s viewers. But, on 5 March 2026, that vision ended. MultiChoice announced it would discontinue the service after years of unsustainable losses.

Launched in 2015, when Netflix was expanding globally and traditional pay TV companies were scrambling to adapt.

Viewers no longer wanted scheduled programming. They wanted content on demand. MultiChoice built Showmax, hoping to secure its place in this new era. The concept made sense. The economics did not.

Streaming is a scale business. Netflix operates in over 190 countries, spending billions on content and spreading those costs across hundreds of millions of subscribers. Showmax served a far smaller African audience, meaning every investment in production, licensing, and technology had to be recovered from a limited pool of users.

Africa’s digital environment compounded the problem. Despite improving internet access, broadband penetration remains uneven, and mobile data is expensive for many households.

Streaming a single HD film can consume several gigabytes, making regular streaming a luxury for much of the target audience.

Piracy made things worse, with films and shows circulating freely through unofficial channels, reducing the incentive to pay for subscriptions.

The deepest problem, however, came from within MultiChoice itself. The company was simultaneously protecting DStv, its profitable satellite TV service. Premium sports rights and major content remained tied to DStv packages.

The result was a fragmented experience. Some content appeared on DStv first, other titles landed on Showmax later, and sports access varied by package. Against the simplicity of global platforms, this confusion cost Showmax dearly.

By the time Showmax invested seriously in original African productions, global competitors had deeper budgets and far larger audiences. Closing that gap proved impossible.

MultiChoice has not confirmed a shutdown date, and the service continues operating for now. Showmax’s lasting lesson is clear: African stories can attract strong audiences. They just need the right platform.
