Sonko gets emotional in viral video, credits God for court victories and life turnaround

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has shared a deeply personal account of his life journey, faith and legal battles in a viral video that has reignited public conversation about his finances and political past.

In the emotional statement, Sonko attributed his frequent public displays of emotion to his strong spiritual connection, saying his tears during prayer or singing are genuine and rooted in reflection on his life experiences.

“I have drawn closer to God… when I reflect on my journey and everything I have gone through, I just find myself overwhelmed with emotion,” he said.

Sonko recounted his rise from humble beginnings, noting he did not come from a political family and had to build his career from scratch. He spoke candidly about past hardships, including time spent in jail, before turning his life around through business, philanthropy and public service.

“I started from nothing… I reformed, started businesses, created jobs and began helping people,” he stated, adding that public trust propelled him into leadership, first as Makadara MP in a 2011 by-election, then Senator, and later Governor.

The former governor also revisited his long-running legal challenges, claiming he faced politically motivated cases and systemic opposition during his tenure. He alleged that some witnesses in past cases had since admitted to being coached or influenced.

“For seven years, I faithfully attended court… but God never left me,” Sonko said.

His remarks come shortly after key court victories involving his finances. Sonko pointed to a recent High Court decision that lifted restrictions on his accounts, as well as a Court of Appeal ruling that declined an attempt by the Assets Recovery Agency to freeze over KSh574 million linked to him.

“Just recently… my money was unfrozen… the Court of Appeal did not agree with them,” he said, framing the outcome as part of what he described as divine intervention throughout his life.

The video also appears to respond to ongoing public claims that he is financially strained. Sonko dismissed the assertions, maintaining that negative narratives about him are unfounded.

“Haters can say whatever they want… that I am broke… but the truth is this: God loves me,” he said.

The clip has since drawn widespread reactions online, with supporters praising his openness and critics questioning aspects of his account. Nonetheless, the video has once again placed Sonko at the centre of national attention, blending personal testimony with ongoing legal and political discourse.

As debate continues, Sonko signaled he remains grounded in faith, vowing to continue praying and expressing himself openly.
