National Economic Development Party leader Mike Sonko has pledged to support families who lost loved ones in the ongoing floods in Nairobi by facilitating the transportation and burial of the deceased.

Speaking at his Upper Hill office in Nairobi on Tuesday, March 10, Sonko announced that his Sonko Rescue Team will assist families of the 27 bodies currently identified at city morgues by providing coffins and transport to take the deceased to their rural homes for burial.

Sonko said the initiative is aimed at easing the financial and emotional burden facing grieving families following the devastating floods that have affected several parts of the capital.

“I want to stand with the families of the deceased. It is sad that they had to lose their loved ones in such a manner. Through the Sonko Rescue Team, we shall provide coffins and transport the bodies and family members to whichever part of the country they wish to bury their loved ones,” he said.

The former Nairobi governor personally spoke to several bereaved families at his office, offering condolences and promising support.

Among those he met was the family of Jerome Mutua, one of the victims who died in the floods.

“Sorry for your loss, mum. I will cater for the coffin expenses, transportation to the place where you will bury your son, and if there are any pending bills, we shall help settle them,” Sonko told the grieving mother.

At the same time, Sonko criticized politicians for what he termed as the politicization of the flooding crisis, urging leaders to focus on helping affected residents instead.

“When I was governor, we made it a habit to unclog drainages to ease flooding. Instead of leaders coming together to help, some are busy politicizing the issue. That is wrong. Let us come together and do what is supposed to be done,” he said.

Heavy rains in recent days have triggered flooding in several parts of Nairobi and other regions across the country, leading to loss of life, displacement of families, and destruction of property.

Authorities have continued to urge residents living in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground as emergency response teams work to assist those affected.

The Sonko Rescue Team will be at the City Mortuary tomorrow to assist in coordinating the transportation of the bodies and supporting the 27 families affected by the floods.
