Sonko’s NEDP steps into by-election arena, unveils first candidates nationwide

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP) has officially entered Kenya’s by-election race, unveiling its first-ever candidates.

The launch, led by party leader Mike Sonko and flanked by party chairman Dr. John Nyamu, Secretary General Ben Mulwa, and other senior officials, saw the issuance of the party’s maiden nomination certificates—signalling NEDP’s readiness to test its growing national appeal at the ballot.

Among the nominees is Isack Abduba Fayo, who will contest the Isiolo South parliamentary seat. George Musini Mukhwana was cleared to vie for the West Kabras MCA seat in Malava Constituency, while Cosmas Njeru and Martin Mukundi received tickets for the Muminji and Evurore wards respectively, both in Mbeere North Constituency.

Addressing supporters and candidates, Sonko dismissed claims that NEDP is a political “project” of external interests, insisting the party is home-grown and people-driven.

“Those who think we are a project of anyone should watch this space. We are launching our maiden candidates to represent us in these by-elections, and we are confident we shall carry the day,” Sonko said.

He pledged full party backing for all nominees, promising a campaign style Kenyans have “never witnessed before,” anchored on door-to-door engagement and direct voter contact.

“You will represent us,” he told the candidates. “We shall be with you on the ground, campaigning door to door. NEDP is about working for wananchi and delivering results. The time for wasting opportunities is over.”

NEDP attained full registration on December 9, 2025, and has since attracted growing interest countrywide. Party leaders say its message of economic empowerment and unity is resonating with voters fatigued by divisive politics, positioning the young outfit as a potential disruptor in the evolving political landscape.

With its first candidates now on the campaign trail, NEDP is betting that an energetic, grassroots-focused strategy will translate early momentum into electoral wins and send a strong statement of intent ahead of future contests.
