South C building collapse: Victim of falling debris rushed to Mbagathi Hospital in stable condition

A building under construction collapsed on Friday, January 2 morning at Shopping Centre area of South C in Nairobi County.

A multi-agency team is currently on site, managing the situation.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the area has since been cordoned off as the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi City County, and the National Police Service continue search and rescue operations.

Police report

A report of the building collapse was made at Akila Police Station by a taxi driver.

The driver reported that at around 4:30am on Friday, January 2, while at South C Shopping Centre, a building under construction collapsed and some flying debris hit his Vitz car, damaging the windscreen.

After the report was made, police rushed to the scene, and it was established that a 16-Storey building under construction had indeed collapsed along Muhoho Avenue.

“Another victim of the falling debris was one Gideon Kimanthi who was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital and is in stable condition,” the report, seen by TV47 Digital, says.

Also part of the multi-agency team that is conducting search and rescue operations is the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Disaster Response team.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has arrived at the scene of the 16-storey building collapse in South C, Nairobi, to assess the situation. Rescue teams, led by the Kenya Red Cross, are working to save those trapped, where two guards are confirmed to be among them.
