The government has launched the Sports for Peace football tournament in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County, bringing together communities from nine counties in an effort to promote peace, unity and cohesion in the once volatile Kerio valley region.
According to the Operation Maliza Uhalifu Commander Lieutenant Colonel Martin Muthaura, sports provide an opportunity for communities to set aside their differences, strengthen unity and focus on development.

On his part, West Pokot Peace Director Jackson Alukusia said that the government’s operation to recover illegal firearms has recorded positive results and contributed to improved security.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Public Service CEC Edwin Seronei urged residents to maintain peace and take advantage of the improved security to pursue development opportunities.

The tournament features teams from Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru and Laikipia counties.
The competition is expected to culminate in a grand finale on Sunday, with organizers hoping it will strengthen ties among communities and promote lasting peace across the region
