‘Where do you find God today?’ – Gen Z perspective

Where do you find God today? In a Sunday service, a YouTube sermon, or a horoscope app? For Gen Z, the answer might just be all of the above.

They are redefining what faith looks like, one “why” at a time.
“I’m spiritual, not religious,” Is a line you’ll often hear from a Gen Z, usually followed by an explanation of the difference.

Where older generations saw spirituality and religion as almost inseparable, today’s youth are quick to draw the line. Spirituality, to them, is a personal belief in a higher power or inner energy, while religion is viewed as structured adherence to doctrine and tradition.

Faith, in the modern-day sense is no longer about rules and rituals, it’s about choice. For some, that choice is astrology, meditation, or crystals. Others take the middle ground with agnosticism: the openness to a higher power, coupled with acceptance of uncertainty.

And then there are those who proudly identify as atheists, trusting science and nature over divine authority.

Technology is unsurprisingly at the heart of this shift. God, for many, is no longer found only in temples or churches. Instead, He, or the idea of Him, shows up on podcasts, livestream sermons, and yes, even religion-themed memes.

What one person calls blasphemy, another will laugh at as satire. Faith, like everything else online, has become digitized, shareable, and open to interpretation.

The link between faith and social justice is also being reshaped. Unlike past generations that followed without much protest, they question traditions that feel oppressive towards women, LGBTQ+ communities, or anyone historically side-lined.

“Submit to a man? Why? Because it was God’s plan? Why?” is the kind of bold questioning that defines them. They want authenticity, not blind obedience.

Religious analysts argue that while religion itself won’t vanish, its face will look drastically different in years to come.

For Gen Z, faith isn’t dying, it’s evolving. And in that evolution, it’s becoming less about institutions and more about individual journeys. In their hands, belief is less about commandments and more about conversations with the universe.
