Two large bales of bhang hidden in mitumba, an escaping passenger: Driver, conductor of Lamu-bound bus arrested

Police on Sunday, October 5 morning intercepted a Lamu-bound bus at Sabaki Bridge in Malindi, Kilifi County, and discovered bhang hidden in the luggage compartment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says that the bus, operated by Tawakal Bus Service, was making its routine trip from Nairobi when officers flagged it down for inspection.

“What seemed like ordinary luggage turned out to be two bulky bales of cannabis sativa (bhang) cleverly concealed among bundles of second-hand (mitumba) clothes,” the DCI reports.

But as the police were conducting a search on the suspicious bales, one passenger believed to be the owner of the illegal substance escaped on foot, disappearing before officers could react.

The bus driver and conductor were arrested on the spot and taken into custody for questioning as the manhunt for the fleeing suspect intensifies.

The seized narcotics are now being detained as exhibits in the ongoing investigations.
