Two more suspects arrested as police recover pistol used in MP Ong’ondo Were’s murder

Detectives investigating the cold blood murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have arrested two more suspects and recovered two pistols from them.

Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, also known as Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Manyasi were arrested in Nairobi.

Authorities say that upon their arrest on Tuesday, May 6 night, the suspects led the detectives to Odhiambo’s house in Chokaa area of Kayole.

“Upon their arrest, the suspects led the investigators to Edwin Odhiambo’s house, where two pistols, a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz, were recovered,” the National Police Service (NPS) says, adding that “nine rounds of 9 mm calibre ammunition were found.”

The suspected murder weapon will be tested to find out who owned it and how it was used.

Additionally, NPS says a bag and footwear matching the description of those worn by one of the suspects at the scene of the incident were also recovered.

“We extend our gratitude to the family and friends of Hon. Charles Were, and the members of the public for the continued provision of valuable information to our investigators, which has allowed for significant progress in this case. If you have any information that could assist the investigation, please contact your nearest police station or use our toll-free numbers: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203),” the Service adds.

An officer involved in the investigations told The Star that earlier ballistic tests on bullets recovered from the scene of crime revealed that the murder weapon had been used in at least three other crimes in Komarock and Kayole area within Nairobi, and Ndumberi in Kiambu County.

MP Were, who was serving his second term, was shot on April 30 along Ngong Road, His driver and bodyguard were in the car but were not harmed.

The bodyguard jumped out and briefly chased the gunman, who escaped on a motorcycle. He then rushed the bleeding MP to Nairobi Hospital.

Since then, detectives have been going over the MP’s movements and using the driver and bodyguard to help trace what happened.

So far, five suspects have been arrested.
