Tracing MP Charles Were’s last steps before he was shot dead

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have made progress in investigating the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were.

The MP was assassinated on Wednesday, April 30 on Ngong Road near City Mortuary roundabout and shot at least four times at close range by a lone gunman who escaped using a sportbike waiting nearby.

Detectives from the DCI Homicide Unit began to put together CCTV footage and relying on witness account from his driver and bodyguard to identify the prime suspect behind Were’s murder.

According to reports, Were is said to have left Parliament Buildings at around 7 p.m. in the company of his bodyguard and driver and headed to City Hall Way before joining Wabera Street.

While at Wabera Street, the MP’s car came to a stop, his bodyguard stepped out and walked into an Mpesa shop where he deposited KSh20,000 into the MP’s phone.

A CCTV footage on Wabera street captured a man wearing a hood and carrying a bag believed to have been monitoring the car.

AT around 7:30 PM, the CCTV captured the MP and his team leaving Wabera Street heading towards Kenyatta Avenue. To avoid traffic, the driver changed route and resorted to using Ralph Bunche Road before joining Argwings Kodhek Road.

The footage later shows Were’s car on Argwings Kodhek Road before later joining Valley Road, where the MP got stuck in traffic.

Oblivious of the situation, clips obtained by the DCI showed the same man who was monitoring the car along Wabera Street was still following Were’s car on Valley Road.

Later the suspect disembarked from his motorcycle went around the car, fired four shots at close range. The first shot shattered the window while the other shots penetrated the MP’s chest and hand.

The killer ran towards the sports bike and the rider took off, heading towards Nairobi CBD.

Attempts by the bodyguard to save the MP proved futile. The bodyguard rushed the MP to Nairobi Hospital only for Were to be declared dead on arrival.

Homicide detectives, under the leadership of Director Martin Nyuguto, arrived at the crime scene on Thursday, May 1 morning to piece together the sequence of events. During their assessment, they recovered three used bullet casings, which are set to undergo ballistic analysis.

Following this, the officers visited Wabera Street—the last place the MP was seen alive before he was fatally shot by unidentified attackers.

Surveillance footage from nearby shops was obtained by police, showing the suspect observing the MP’s vehicle, which was parked beside an M-Pesa outlet.

As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities have interrogated three individuals: the MP’s driver, his bodyguard, and the M-Pesa operator. The investigation has also been expanded to include Kasipul, as officers explore possible political motives behind the killing.

An autopsy led by chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, to provide further insights into the cause of the death and support investigation.
