UDA Senator warns DP Gachagua over one man one shilling comments

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has slammed Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua for reviving the one man one vote one shilling debate in a recent event.

Mungatana was hosted by senior anchor Fred Indimuli Wednesday morning on TV47’s breakfast show Morning Cafe which airs every weekday from 6am to 10am.

The visibly irked senator, who is a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, insisted Gachagua’s sentiments were personal and not the party’s position.

“He (Gachagua) said he is a firm believer of one man one vote one shilling. I am also a firm believer of one man one vote one square kilometre. We differ completely.

“I want to tell the DP and his advisors that unless he does not think counties like Lamu, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, Taita Taveta, Marsabit… unless he thinks all those counties are not important… If he intends to become the president then he is heading in the wrong direction,” Mungatana explained.

The first-time senator opined that perhaps the second in command blurted out the statement because he was in his backyard, but it was not the official party stand.

“We have never sat as UDA to pass a policy which was being pronounced by the deputy president. Even if he is the deputy party leader for now he is not speaking for us. In the Constitution we are all equal.”

Mungatana argued that the DP should have called a parliamentary group meeting to discuss the matter and listen to divergent views from his party members before making such declarations.

“If you go public I will also go public and tell you Gachagua you are wrong,” he added.

He stated that all counties in the country were equally important and should not be denied resources based solely on the number of residents.
