United opposition leaders demand respect for worship spaces, end to state intimidation

Jubilee Party Deputy Party Leader Dr. Fred Matiang’i on Sunday, February 1, 2026 joined United Opposition leaders at ACK St. Mark’s Church, Gitugi, Mathioya Constituency in Murang’a County, where he delivered a strong message on national unity, democracy, and the misuse of state power.

Speaking during the church service, Matiang’i condemned the growing trend of intimidation of citizens and leaders, warning that Kenya was sliding into dangerous territory where democratic freedoms are under threat.

Matiang’i emphasized that security is not a favour granted to those who please the government, but a constitutional right for all Kenyans.

He cautioned against the deployment of police to intimidate citizens, particularly in places of worship, noting that attacking people in church crosses a red line and violates freedom of worship, assembly, and movement.

Calling for unity across political and ethnic lines, Matiang’i urged leaders from all regions to strengthen their political parties and ultimately come together in a broad, inclusive opposition movement.

He also dismissed claims that bringing Kenyans together amounts to tribalism, insisting that national cohesion, dialogue, and respect for dissent are the only viable paths to stability.

On governance and public service delivery, Matiang’i criticised the government for failing citizens, particularly in education and social protection.

He reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to restoring free education, protecting public resources, and fixing the country through responsible, people-centered leadership, stressing that Kenya’s problems are not insurmountable if leaders put the nation above personal ambition.
