Why NSSF is marking 60 years with a massive tree planting drive; target set at 2 million trees

To celebrate 60 years of service, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has launched a massive plan to plant 2 million trees across the country.

The initiative – dubbed ‘The Green Campaign’ – is part of the government’s broader plan to plant 15 billion trees by the year 2032 as a response to climate change.

“For 60 years, the National Social Security Fund has safeguarded the future of workers across Kenya. As part of our 60 years celebrations, we’re partnering with the Ministry of Labour & Social Protection to plant 2 million trees nationwide in this Financial year,” NSSF Board Chairperson David Njeru said during the launch of the initiative on Friday, August 8 during a tree planting and golf tournament at Migaa Golf Estate, Nairobi.

As part of the efforts, NSSF and other stakeholders undertook the restoration of Kamiti River – a vital step in environmental conservation and sustainability.

Consequently, the day saw the planting of trees in Migaa, with the target being to plant 300,000 for the next one week.

The tournament united sponsors and communities in a shared commitment to a greener future. Some of the sponsors include; Finnet Trust, and Migaa Golf Club.

“At the National Social Security Fund, we are committed to safeguarding your future. Saving for your retirement means living with dignity, security, and independence after employment,” Njeru said, revealing that the two million trees will be planted during this financial year.

Whether one is working in the formal or informal sector, NSSF gives Kenyans an opportunity to invest in a healthier, more resilient future.

Saving with NSSF also enables one to contribute to the creation of sustainable livelihoods for today and for generations to come.
