The fate of the final slot in the FKF Premier League for the 2026/27 season will be decided today (Tuesday, October 6) when Kariobangi Sharks take on Mombasa United in the second leg of the promotion and relegation playoff.
The match will be played at Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi from 3:00 p.m., with Mombasa United holding a one-goal advantage after securing a 2–1 victory in the first leg played at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa on October 1.
Mombasa United, who finished third in the National Super League last season, made good use of home advantage to claim an important victory. Dennis Mabeya opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Waziri Shentembo added the second goal.
Kariobangi Sharks, who finished 16th in the FKF Premier League, managed to reduce the deficit through Wayne Dalvin towards the closing stages of the match. The goal means Sharks still have a strong chance of overturning the aggregate score in the second leg.
For Mombasa United, the first-leg victory gives them an important advantage as they seek promotion to the top flight.
However, head coach Abdulhamid Moallin has stressed that the first-leg result is not enough, urging his players not to be carried away by the early advantage ahead of the decisive return match.
Sharks, meanwhile, need a positive result in front of their supporters to turn the tie around while Mombasa United will need to protect their advantage or secure a result that allows them to finish the playoff ahead on aggregate.
The playoff came amid controversy surrounding promotion and relegation regulations in Kenyan football. Football Kenya Federation eventually helped facilitate an agreement that allowed the two teams to settle their fate on the pitch over two legs.
All eyes will, therefore, be on Police Sacco Stadium. After 90 minutes, one team will retain or secure its place in the FKF Premier League for the coming season, while the other will be forced to compete in the second tier.
