Police officers in Adjumani District, West Nile Sub-region, Uganda, have arrested a 35-year-old woman for allegedly killing her co-wife during a fight on Valentine’s Day.
According to police reports, Jane Baatio fought with 34-year-old Ahmad Zakia in Egge Village, following a misunderstanding on February 14, 2026.
Neighbours intervened to stop the fight and rushed Zakia to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The fight broke out shortly after Ahmad Maiku convened a meeting with elders to address an issue involving his two wives.
“During the meeting, both women began behaving disruptively and refused to adhere to proceedings.
“As a result, the meeting was suspended by their father-in-law, Swaib Kanaa, who instructed the women to leave the premises as the meeting was postponed,” said SP Collins Asea, the North West Nile Region police spokesperson.
While leaving the compound, a physical altercation erupted between the two women during which Baatio overpowered Zakia and twisted her neck.
“Zakia suffocated during the physical confrontation. Witnesses intervened, rescuing Zakia and rushing her to Nyumanzi Health Center III for medical attention. Despite efforts to save her, Zakia succumbed to her injuries around midnight,” police reported.
The homicide investigation team visited the crime scene, arrested Baatio and moved Zakia’s body to the Adjumani General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
At the same time, the police boss called upon community leaders to foster peace and organize community meetings aimed at conflict resolution to prevent similar occurrences in future.
