The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) today, Thursday, May 22, 2025, arrested two officials from Mumias Level 4 Hospital in Kakamega County for allegedly soliciting and receiving a Ksh 200,000 bribe.
William Mmasava, a Supply Chain Officer, and Linet Kavaya, a Biomedical Engineer, were taken into custody.
They are accused of demanding the money to facilitate the release of payment for medical equipment legally supplied to the hospital.
The arrests follow an investigation launched after a formal complaint was lodged with the EACC on May 16, 2025. A company had supplied the hospital with an X-ray scanner valued at Ksh 1.4 million.
The hospital had agreed to pay in three installments, with the first payment of Ksh 500,000 already settled on April 17, 2025.
On May 8, 2025, the complainant was contacted by Dr. Mohammed Munyendo, the Medical Superintendent at the hospital, who allegedly demanded a Ksh 400,000 bribe to facilitate the release of the second installment of Ksh 650,000.
This demand was reiterated the following day during a meeting with Mrs. Braxides Bunoro, an Administrator at the facility.
Despite the hospital depositing the second installment into the supplier’s KCB account, access to the funds was restricted. The EACC reports that the complainant continued to receive coercive calls from Dr. Munyendo, Mrs. Bunoro, Mr. Mmasava, and Mrs. Kavaya, all demanding a bribe before the payment could be accessed.
EACC investigators launched an operation on May 21, 2025, culminating in the arrest of Mmasava and Kavaya at the KCB Mumias branch shortly after they received a Ksh 200,000 bribe from the complainant.
The two suspects were then transported to the EACC’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and later booked at the Bungoma Police Station. They are currently being held there, pending further investigations.
