Kenya reaffirms commitment to end HIV/AIDS, eyes 2030 deadline

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale held a bilateral meeting with UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima in Geneva, underscoring Kenya’s dedication to eradicating HIV/AIDS and fostering global collaborations for an AIDS-free world.

CS Duale reiterated Kenya’s ambitious target to eliminate AIDS in children by 2027 and end the disease as a public health threat by 2030. He highlighted the nation’s consistent progress, evidenced by a reduction in new HIV infections and a decline in AIDS-related deaths across the country.

Kenya has notably surpassed two of the three UNAIDS global targets in its HIV response. Currently, an impressive 98% of individuals living with HIV are aware of their status. Of those diagnosed, 98% are on sustained antiretroviral therapy, and among those undergoing treatment, 94% have achieved viral suppression.

Despite these significant strides, challenges persist, particularly in reaching key populations and combating the pervasive stigma associated with HIV. Duale stressed the critical need for sustainable HIV funding, advocating for enhanced domestic resource mobilization. He lauded UNAIDS for its invaluable advocacy, data-driven policy guidance, and technical assistance in the fight against HIV.

In response, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima commended Kenya’s robust efforts, specifically acknowledging the country’s initiatives in safeguarding adolescent girls and young women. She pledged UNAIDS’ continued support for Kenya’s HIV programs and youth-targeted interventions.

Also present at the meeting were Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga, Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, Health Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth, and Ambassador Fancy Too, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.
