Radio presenter Massawe Japanni has explained her decision to shave off her signature dreadlocks, saying the change was not prompted by a crisis or a passing phase, but by personal growth.
Sharing photos of her transformed appearance on Instagram on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Massawe kept her explanation short and honest.
“Not a crisis. Not a phase. Just growth,” she wrote, making clear that the change was deeply personal and rooted in her own evolution rather than any external pressure or difficult moment.
Massawe joins a growing list of Kenyan celebrities who have parted ways with their dreadlocks over the years, each for their own reasons.
Rapper Nyashinski turned heads when he shaved his well-known locks, early 2025, marking the moment with a reflective message about the inevitability of change.
“And to imagine that at some point, even this version of you, will be the old you. God willing,” he wrote.
Media personality Willis Raburu also made news when he cut his dreadlocks, later explaining that the hairstyle had at one point represented a form of personal rebellion against those who tried to dictate how he should look and carry himself.
When he finally let it go, it was equally on his own terms.
Content creator Thee Pluto’s story took a more unusual turn, he shaved his locks in 2022 after Nairobi Woman Representative aspirant Wangui Ng’ang’a offered him Ksh 1 million to do so, turning what is usually a quiet personal decision into a very public moment.
