46 years later! Gilgil – Nyahururu Metre Gauge Railway returns

Kenya Railways is set to resume operations along the 77.8km Gilgil-Nyahururu Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) branch line as part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the country’s railway network and enhance regional connectivity.

The historic railway corridor, commonly referred to as the “Thompson Railway” due to its connection to Thompson Falls in Nyahururu, is expected to officially resume operations on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026 for passengers and freight, following rehabilitation works undertaken by the railway company.

On Tuesday, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano is expected to launch the railway line from Gilgil station, where she will be joined by members of the public for the premier ride to Nyahururu station.

In the resumed operations, the passenger train will have 4 weekly trips which include Nairobi to Nyahururu on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 AM and  return train from Nyahururu to Nairobi on Wednesdays and Sundays at 10 AM in either economy class, second class or first class.

The railway company has rehabilitated and maintained the tracks, cleared bushes along the corridor and enhanced operational infrastructure along the line.

The passenger stations which include Gilgil,Ol Kalou and Nyahururu have also been upgraded.

The Gilgil–Nyahururu branch line was constructed in the 1920s, with operations commencing in 1929.

The railway played a significant role in opening up the Aberdare Highlands and parts of the Rift Valley by facilitating movement of agricultural produce, livestock, timber and passengers.

The line served key agricultural towns including Gilgil, Ol Kalou and Nyahururu, enabling farmers and traders to access local and export markets efficiently.

Over the years, deterioration of infrastructure and declining freight volumes led to suspension of operations.

The current revitalization forms part of broader Kenya Railways efforts to modernize and restore railway operations across the country.

The resumption of services along the Gilgil–Nyahururu corridor is expected to unlock economic opportunities across the region by improving access to markets, facilitating affordable transportation and supporting trade and tourism activities.
