The gold rush for Kenya began after Emily Ngii earned Kenya’s first gold medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana, in the 20km Walking Race. Now, Kenya boasts an additional three gold medals, bringing the gold medal tally for Kenya to four.

Commonwealth Games 800m champion Mary Moraa won Kenya’s second gold medal at the continental event by clocking 50.57 to cross the finish line first in the women’s 400m race.

She beat Nigeria’s Elo Esther Joseph, who timed 51.61 to finish second, and Benin’s Sita Sibiri, who clocked a national record of 51.74 to clinch bronze.

Moraa’s win came less than 24 hours after she led the 4x400m mixed relay team to bronze at the same competition.

Elsewhere, 3000m steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech reigned supreme in the finals to bring home the third gold medal for Kenya after destroying the field in 9:15.61. However, her compatriots Purity Kirui and Caren Kibet came home a distant sixth and seventh, respectively.

Aaron Kemei sealed the night with the fourth gold medal for Kenya after he clocked 1:45.72 to dominate the Men’s 800 meters finals, followed closely by his countryman Alex Kipngetich in the second place, timing 1:45.73.
