DCI arrests suspected drug trafficker, seizes 1,600 rolls of bhang in Bomet

A suspected drug trafficker has been arrested in Bomet County after detectives recovered approximately 1,600 rolls of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, during an intelligence-led operation.

In a statement posted on its X account on May 31, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives from its Bomet office intercepted a vehicle transporting the narcotics along the Silibwet–Bomet Road.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Bernard Marwa, was arrested after officers signalled the vehicle, a Toyota Succeed registration number KDR 477X, to stop. According to the DCI, the driver ignored the officers’ orders and sped off, triggering a pursuit.

“Upon being signalled to stop, the driver defied the officers’ orders and sped off towards Kapsimotwa Shopping Centre, prompting a pursuit,” the DCI stated.

The chase ended when the vehicle entered a narrow road, forcing the occupants to abandon it and flee on foot. Detectives managed to apprehend the driver, while two other passengers escaped and remain at large.

A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of eight bags containing the suspected narcotic substance. “A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the eight bags, each containing approximately two hundred rolls of the narcotic substance,” the agency said.

The seizure is the latest in a series of operations targeting the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs in the region. Authorities believe the intelligence-led operation disrupted a network involved in transporting narcotics within and beyond Bomet County.

The DCI confirmed that the suspect has been processed for arraignment and will face charges related to drug trafficking. Meanwhile, the recovered drugs and the vehicle have been detained as exhibits.

Investigations are ongoing as detectives intensify efforts to identify and arrest the two suspects who escaped during the operation.
