El Niño rains cause landslide fears in Elgeyo Marakwet

Residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County have been urged to step up preparedness measures as the country braces for the expected El Niño rains, which could trigger flooding, landslides and soil erosion in vulnerable areas.

Speaking in Iten, NEMA Environment Director in Elgeyo Marakwet County Stephen Kimutu called on residents to take precautionary measures and avoid activities that contribute to environmental degradation.

Kimutu emphasized the importance of protecting forests, riverbanks and other environmentally sensitive areas, noting that environmental conservation can help reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.

He also urged residents living in low-lying areas, downstream and along rivers to relocate to safer grounds before the rains intensify to minimize the risk of loss of lives and property.

Parts of Elgeyo Marakwet, particularly the lowlands and areas prone to landslides, remain highly vulnerable during periods of heavy rainfall.

The county has in the past experienced deadly landslides, with the recent incident in Chesongoch, Marakwet East, highlighting the dangers posed by heavy rains.

Several people lost their lives in the Chesongoch landslide, while homes and other property were also destroyed, leaving affected families counting significant losses.

Kimutu has therefore urged residents to remain vigilant, monitor weather warnings and take early action whenever there are signs of flooding or landslides.

He further appealed to residents to work together with authorities in protecting the environment and ensuring communities in high-risk areas are moved to safer locations before disasters occur.
