Elephants ravage farms and destroy crops in Songeto, Elgeyo Marakwet County

Farmers in Songeto, Elgeyo Marakwet County, are counting losses after Elephants invaded their farms overnight, destroying mango trees and other fruit crops.

The Elephants are believed to have strayed from Rimoi National Reserve into nearby farms, leaving farmers facing significant losses while raising concerns over the safety of residents.

Speaking to Cape Media, the affected farmers said the invasion has disrupted their livelihoods, with the destruction of crops threatening their income and agricultural activities.

The farmers are now calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service and other relevant authorities to intervene urgently and prevent further destruction of crops and possible attacks on residents.

They are also urging the government to establish lasting solutions to the persistent human-wildlife conflict in the area, noting that repeated Elephant invasions could undermine farming, which remains a key source of livelihood for many households.

The incident has renewed concerns over the growing conflict between people and wildlife in areas bordering Rimoi National Reserve, where Elephants sometimes venture into settlements and agricultural land in search of food.

Residents are appealing for prompt action to protect their farms, safeguard human lives and ensure that farmers receive the necessary support when wildlife destroys their crops.

As farmers assess the extent of the damage, they hope authorities will respond swiftly to prevent further losses and restore a sense of security in Songeto.
