The Elgeyo/Marakwet County Assembly has unanimously passed the Peace Building and Conflict Management Bill, marking a significant step towards strengthening unity and addressing conflicts across the county.
The motion, tabled by Administration and Justice Committee Chair Hon. Paul Suter, follows extensive public participation carried out in various parts of the county, where residents shared their views on the proposed legislation.
Once signed into law by the Governor, the legislation will be known as the Elgeyo/Marakwet Peace Building and Conflict Management Act, 2026.

The new law establishes a comprehensive framework to guide peace-building initiatives and conflict management at all levels, from local communities to the county government.
It aims to promote cohesion, unity, and peaceful coexistence among residents while addressing the root causes of conflicts.
Key provisions of the Act include the establishment of coordinated mechanisms to support peace initiatives, enhance collaboration among stakeholders, and mobilise resources to sustain peace efforts.

It also outlines strategies for preventing, mitigating, and managing conflicts in a structured and timely manner.
Additionally, the law seeks to align county-level peace initiatives with national policies, ensuring a more integrated and coordinated approach to conflict resolution and long-term stability.
Leaders and stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that the legislation will play a critical role in improving how disputes are handled and in fostering sustainable peace across communities.
If assented to, the Act is expected to transform conflict management and strengthen harmony across Elgeyo/Marakwet County, particularly in areas that have previously experienced recurrent disputes.
