Expelled ODM MPs defiantly meet President Ruto

Expelled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members of parliament on Wednesday, September 13, held a meeting with President Ruto at State House, Nairobi.

The expelled ODM legislators assured President Ruto of their support and commitment to working with the government.

During the meeting, they encouraged the president to visit their constituencies for purposes of initiating development projects for the benefit of the electorates.

Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, Gem’s Elisha Odhiambo, and Langata’s Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o held discussions with the president at State House.

Others present included Uriri MP Mark Nyamita, Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda, and Rongo MP Paula Abuor.

A meeting with the president was held after the expelled ODM legislators won the first battle in a bid to retain their seats.

This was after the political party’s dispute tribunal suspended ODM’s decision to expel the rebel members.

The ODM’s decision to expel rebel legislators was suspended by the tribunal, pending the determination of court cases challenging their expulsion.

“Pending the hearing and determination of the suits, the office of the Registrar of Political Parties is barred from effecting and enforcing the decision of ODM by removing the complainants as members of the party,” ruled Nungo.

However, ODM stated that the expulsion of the members is in conformity with the party constitution which prohibits its members from supporting the ideologies of rival parties.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna had earlier noted that he plans to convene the National Delegates Council (NDC) meeting which will finalize the expulsion of rebel members.

Sifuna’s sentiments come after the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) on September 6 expelled the MPs for defying party positions and gross misconduct.

In a separate incident, an ODM supporter Isaac Otwoma advised Lang’ata MP Jalang’o to apologize to Raila Odinga if he wants to retain his seat.

According to Otwoma, Lang’ata constituency is an ODM stronghold and Jalang’o should fight to remain in the party if he wants to retain his seat.
