“I want to be President, not a running mate”- Martha Karua declares Presidential bid, vows to serve one term

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has firmly declared her intention to vie for the presidency in the next General Election, ruling out any possibility of serving as a running mate and promising to serve for only one term if elected.

Speaking during an interview with political analyst Herman Manyora on his YouTube podcast aired on Friday, July 3, 2026, Karua said leadership positions are determined by the will of the people and should never be viewed as an entitlement.

“Nobody is entitled to be elected. Being given a chance to serve is not an entitlement, it’s a privilege and Kenyans decide; that’s why we go to elections,” Karua stated.

The former Justice Minister and veteran opposition politician made it clear that she is seeking the country’s top seat and is not interested in returning to a deputy position.

Karua previously served as the running mate to veteran opposition leader the late Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential election.

“I am going for President, I am not ready to be deputy. I had a good run with Raila and I was ready to deputize him. I have had enough of that. I want to be the candidate; I don’t want to be a running mate,” she said.

Karua also used the platform to call for national unity, urging Kenyans to come together in pursuit of political and economic liberation.

“Wakenya, naomba tuungane, tujikomboe,” she appealed.

In a notable pledge, the PLP leader promised that if elected president, she would voluntarily serve only one term, arguing that leadership should be about service rather than personal entitlement to power.

“Na pia mimi mkinipatia kazi, nitauliza term moja pekee yake, nifanye kazi, nionyeshe uongozi sio title deed, niondoke mwingine aje aendelee. Mimi nitafanya one term, one term by choice,” Karua declared.

Her remarks signal an early and unequivocal entry into the presidential race, while positioning herself as a candidate advocating for accountability, leadership renewal, and democratic choice.
