Jubilee Health Insurance has partnered with global insurtech firm Boltech to roll out embedded insurance solutions aimed at expanding access to health cover by integrating insurance into everyday consumer transactions.
The partnership will enable customers to access insurance products through services they already use, including payments, fuel purchases, travel bookings and other digital platforms, eliminating the need to purchase cover separately.
Jubilee Health Insurance Chief Executive Officer and Principal Officer Njeri Jomo said the collaboration is designed to bridge Kenya’s insurance protection gap by making health insurance more accessible and convenient.
“Our focus is to ensure insurance becomes part of everyday life rather than something people only think about when they need medical care. By embedding insurance into existing customer journeys, we can significantly expand access to affordable health protection,” Jomo said.
She said the initiative aligns with Jubilee’s broader ambition of supporting universal health coverage by reaching more uninsured Kenyans through partnerships with businesses that already serve millions of customers.
Jomo noted that many Kenyans continue to rely on out-of-pocket payments for healthcare, exposing households to financial hardship when illness strikes.
“We are developing tailor-made products for different customer segments while leveraging technology to deliver them seamlessly. Our focus is not only on curative care but also on preventive solutions that keep people healthy,” she said.
She cited estimates showing that more than one million Kenyans experience catastrophic health expenditure every year, describing insurance as an important tool for strengthening household financial resilience.
Under the partnership, Jubilee will leverage customer insights from ecosystem partners to integrate existing insurance products or co-create new offerings tailored to different consumer needs.
Among the first products expected under the initiative is HospiCash, a hospital cash benefit designed to provide policy holders with financial support during hospitalisation. Jubilee also plans to embed personal accident and funeral benefits into partner platforms, with pilot launches expected in the coming months.
The insurer is targeting underserved segments, including retail consumers and gig economy workers, as it seeks to increase health insurance penetration across Kenya and the wider East African region.
Boltech Africa General Manager Bente Krogmann said the company’s technology platform enables insurers to distribute protection seamlessly through businesses that consumers interact with daily.
“Our role is to ensure insurance becomes available within the services people are already using. Whether someone is buying a flight ticket, a bus ticket or making other digital transactions, protection should be available with just a click,” Krogmann said.
She said experiences from markets in Southeast Asia show that embedded insurance can significantly improve uptake when products are simple, relevant and easy for consumers to understand.
Krogmann added that Boltech’s technology allows businesses to integrate insurance products within weeks through application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling customers to purchase protection without disrupting their existing digital journeys.
The partnership combines Jubilee’s insurance underwriting expertise with Boltech’s embedded insurance technology, with both firms betting that ecosystem partnerships will play a key role in expanding insurance penetration across the region.
