A suspected serial phone snatcher linked to a string of muggings in Nairobi East has been arrested in Majengo after police caught him allegedly robbing a member of the public.

According to a statement posted by the National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday, July 23, officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station were conducting a routine patrol in the Majengo slums on July 22 when they intercepted the suspect in the act.

Police said the suspect had already violently robbed a victim of a mobile phone and KSh3,000 in cash before officers moved in and arrested him.

“The suspect was intercepted while violently robbing a member of the public and had already forcefully taken the victim’s mobile phone and KSh3,000 in cash,” the National Police Service said.

A subsequent search led to the recovery of a toy pistol, the stolen mobile phone, and 152 rolls of cannabis sativa, all of which were seized as exhibits.

“Following a thorough search of the suspect, the officers recovered a toy pistol, a mobile phone and 152 rolls of cannabis sativa,” the statement added.

The suspect has since been placed in police custody and is awaiting processing before being arraigned in court.

Police said the recovered items have been securely kept as exhibits to support the ongoing investigations and prosecution.

Reaffirming its commitment to tackling crime across the country, the National Police Service urged members of the public to continue working closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal and suspicious activities.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to combating criminality country-wide. We urge members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement officers to ensure safety and security for all,” the statement said.

The service encouraged the public to report crime through the nearest police station or via its toll-free emergency numbers and anonymous reporting channels as part of efforts to enhance public safety and curb criminal activities.
