Kcb, Mathare United, APS Bomet and Gor mahia set for SportPesa League round two

The 2026/2027 SportPesa League continues on Saturday, October 17, with two exciting fixtures as clubs seek to build momentum early in the campaign. KCB host Mathare United at Police Sacco Stadium at 2:00 pm, before APS Bomet take on defending champions Gor Mahia at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay at 4:15 pm.

Both matches present different challenges, with KCB and Mathare United searching for their first victories of the season, while Gor Mahia aim to maintain their winning start and APS Bomet look to secure maximum points.

KCB will be seeking to bounce back after being held to a 2-2 draw by Nairobi United in their opening match. Geoffrey Ojunga and Evans Malo scored for the Bankers in an entertaining encounter that exposed both their attacking potential and areas requiring improvement.

Head coach Robert Matano has called on his players to improve their efficiency and work collectively as they pursue their first three points of the campaign.

“We had a positive start to the season, and although we would have preferred to collect all three points, the opening match gave us valuable lessons,” Matano said.

The experienced tactician added that the team had identified areas requiring improvement and was focused on preparing adequately for the encounter against Mathare United.

Mathare United, meanwhile, head into the match after a goalless draw against APS Bomet. Despite failing to find the back of the net, the Slum Boys secured a point and will be determined to improve their attacking performance against KCB.

The encounter offers both sides an opportunity to register their first victory and strengthen their position in the early league standings.

Attention will then shift to Homa Bay, where APS Bomet face a formidable challenge against defending champions Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia began their title defence impressively, recording a 4-2 victory over Murang’a SEAL at Nyayo National Stadium. Shariff Musa scored twice, while Alpha Onyango and Jackson Dwang added a goal each to secure maximum points for the record Kenyan champions.

The result underlined Gor Mahia’s attacking strength, although conceding twice highlighted the need for greater defensive concentration.

Head coach Charles Akonnor will be hoping his players maintain their attacking momentum as they seek a second consecutive victory and an early advantage in the title race.

APS Bomet, coached by Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo, will be equally determined to make an impression after opening their campaign with a goalless draw against Mathare United.

Omollo believes his team can compete against the champions and has urged his players to remain disciplined while taking advantage of opportunities to attack.

“We will be going for the maximum points on Saturday,” Omollo said, adding that the team had worked on areas where it underperformed against Mathare United.

The coach also acknowledged the quality of their opponents, noting that Gor Mahia possess experienced players and a dangerous attacking unit. He stressed the importance of defensive organisation and exploiting spaces left behind when the champions push forward.

APS Bomet will, however, be without centre-back Edward Mazembe, who sustained an injury in the opening match. His absence presents a selection challenge for Omollo as he prepares his defence for Gor Mahia’s attacking threat.

Despite Gor Mahia’s strong start, APS Bomet have demonstrated that they can trouble the reigning champions.

In November 2025, APS Bomet recorded a memorable 4-1 victory over Gor Mahia, exposing weaknesses in the champions’ defence. Gor Mahia responded in February 2026 with a 2-1 victory, leaving the two sides with one win each from their two league meetings last season.

That record provides APS Bomet with encouragement ahead of Saturday’s encounter, although Gor Mahia’s opening-day performance makes them a formidable opponent.

Saturday’s fixtures will provide an early indication of how the four teams are shaping up for the new campaign. KCB and Mathare United will be eager to turn their opening draws into victories, while APS Bomet face the difficult task of containing Gor Mahia’s attack.

For the defending champions, another victory would strengthen their title defence. For APS Bomet, a positive result would demonstrate their ambition to challenge the league’s established sides.
